Online Personal Training With @NewYouPt_sc

This is a blog I have been meaning to post for a while but the weight of other peoples opinions is sometimes heavier than anything else we are carrying. I'm in a good place right now though, and a lot of that is largely down to this decision I made back in January - To start doing online Personal Training with Paul at New You Personal Training.

Paul is a personal trainer based in Sheffield, working at firehouse fitness, Millhouses. You can find him by following the below buttons

Now I know some of you are sat there thinking "online personal training, does that even work?!" ... Trust me when I tell you I thought much the same. I have followed Paul and had conversations online with him on numerous occasions, he gave me some brilliant advice and his time when my neurological condition was particularly difficult and I had reached out. People remember that, when you take the time to understand the things that are a stumbling block for them and Paul really does do that for his clients and encourages them to find work arounds.

My condition means I don't feel confident in the typical gym setting, but after a new medication caused my weight to fluctuate and family bereavements turned me to comfort eating I felt I needed to make a change. My mental health was shot and having been very unwell previously I wanted to take control in my own way. Personal training with Paul has helped me to do that, I feel comfortable in my own space and in control. Paul is fantastic and works with me balancing motivation and knowing when I've reached a personal limit.

I think a main worry is that at home there isn't all the fancy equipment that would be in the gym, so ill show you what I started with. My laptop obviously for the skype connection, handy as I could tip the screen up and down for positioning for exercises.

A Skype session photo taken by Paul

The photo above shows what i started with all of which were bought from Asda, bar the skipping rope which I believe belonged to one of the teenagers many moons ago. Now in hindsight I don't think I ever used the 2kg weights, so maybe do some research first. But this photo came to a total of around £20. In what I think was my first session where we talked through and looked at what I could comfortably do Paul asked me if I had a broom handle, it has proven invaluable for many exercises and didn't cost me a thing :D

When you begin personal training you are set up with a client file with your beginning weight and measurements, your programme. You have access to this with google sheets and when inputting your weights and measurements your calorie deficit is all worked out for you - but this is all something that Paul goes through with you and explains - and is very much still explaining to me!

I am a number of weeks in now and I feel better physically and mentally than I have in a long time. I have steadily lost weight and inches and am feeling much more capable. My balance is improving and I am having less frequent vertigo attacks. Paul really takes into consideration the whole client - their physical, emotional and mental health - he spends a lot of his free time doing check ins and maintaining a free "Happiness Hub" group online which is open to anyone not jus clients to talk, share and just have a social space to feel supported - You will find the link on the New you website which I have linked above.

Motivation is always a key topic people ask me about with online personal training, and of course it is a little different to having a physical presence or going out to the gym but ultimately you get out what you out in. If you want to succeed and you make the effort then you will and with Paul (and the support online through the happiness hub) I have the support system in place for those dips that we all have. No one is on it 100% percent of the time, but I started this journey wanting something and when my motivation is low or i feel defeated that is what i come back too. The feeling of achieving something new, a new weight, improved rep or feeling better in myself is what kept me going in the beginning, and now I actually look forward to and enjoy those sessions we have a laugh and put the world to rights - its my time.

End of a particularly trying session :)

If your considering online PT i urge you to go and read up, everybody has their preferences and people who they click with. Any good PT will listen to what you need and advise on what they can provide you with. I am forever grateful to Paul and New You, I feel like im changing as a person for the better and that is with the support of greatly skilled, awesome people.

The growing collection
