I've just locked your door for the last time. 20 years of memories. Of the sweetcorn patch when we first moved in. The locks on the outside of the bedroom doors, of Christmas mornings and of so many different cars on the driveway I've lost count. Of rival football matches going off and the best omlettes I've ever eaten in my life. Bringing home your first grandson, and seeing you through the hardest most courageous battle of our lives.I miss you more than I could ever put into words but you'll be with me, you aren't in the bricks and mortar. You are Joseph's sense of humour, Jack's intelligence, Esme's sassy attitude, Harleys cheeky laugh. You are David's resilience, Jennys ability to care so deeply when her own troubles are heavy, my black humour and sarcasm.
You are in the tears and laughter of your parents and brother and sister as they recall the ways you tormented each other and the brilliant childhood you had.
You are the hundreds of carers you trained and sent out to make the world a better place, the comfort and laughs that you gave to those who had so little.
When me and Jenny left your house today next doors cat came in and wouldn't leave, it made me smile in spite of everything, could picture you cursing.
I hope that your house brings so much joy to the new family, I'll be carrying you with me.
